Chapter I: Start of a Journey
Shayla La Cruse, Cesar Cachè, Paolo Kirzaiel, and Jeff Maxx were all popular throughout the whole town. All of them were between fourteen and sixteen and all had more than two police records to their name, mostly for trespassing. Despite their infamous reputation they were still the ones all the children and teenagers of the town looked up to, the fearless, the daredevils, to them they were 101% cool―
To their parents they were 101% trouble.
If any kind of urban legend came to their ears that was near or within town, the four of them would definitely check it out. Any reports of ghosts, serial killers, UFOs and they’ll be there quicker than the local police.
There was one place, however, that the four teenagers haven’t gone to yet. It was a place twenty miles south of the town, an old estate owned by a once famous composer, Benjamin Creeley. It wasn’t that they were afraid, there just wasn’t any means of getting there quick enough.
So in the end, they decided to steal Paolo’s dad’s car.
The full moon was up so the flashlights they brought had no use as they all marched quietly past the front door to the garage of the Kirzaiel house.
“Got the keys, Pao?” Shayla asked.
“Yep, too easy, could have crashed every dish in the house and mom and dad wouldn’t wake up.”
Cesar and Jeff followed behind them, glancing uneasily at the sleeping dog lying upon the welcome doormat.
“Hope Fenriz wouldn’t wake up.” Cesar said. “He scares me more than your dad does.”
They suppressed their laughter at Cesar’s remark but Jeff tripped against one of the loose clay stones that paved Paolo’s driveway and landed on the gravel.
Fenriz sat upright abruptly and his yellowish eyes looked at the group by the garage.
“Open the garage! Open! Open!” They all screamed at Paolo.
The dog rushed at them and they grasped at the nearest object that could be used as a weapon.
The garage door opened slowly and they all slipped under the small opening at the bottom and panicked as Paolo fumbled with the keys.
Paolo’s dad heard all the noise from outside and stirred then woke up.
“What the hell is that?” he mumbled groggily walking to the window.
The car began to drive away from the garage with a girl hanging at one of the open doors kicking at Fenriz. Shayla looked up at Mr. Kirzaiel and waved then pushed off the moaning Fenriz from the car.
“PAOLO! GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW OR ELSE―”
The rest of whatever else Mr. Kirzaiel was about to say was lost in the loud music blaring from the stereo.
Mr. Kirzaiel took out his phone and dialed the police.
“Lemme guess,” the officer said at the other line “Something up with those nutty kids again?”
“Uh… yeah… my son, Paolo just stole my car… you know the plate number right? Yes… Lock them up for at least a night just to teach them!”
Mr. Kirzaiel frowned at Fenriz who was still barking at the empty driveway. He sat back down in bed and shook his head with slight amusement.
This wasn’t the worst thing his son ever did. Nothing to worry about.
“TEENAGERS SCARE THE LIVING SH*T OUTTA ME!”
The four of them sang along loudly to the song of MCR, realizing how much the lyrics fit with what they just did. They heard the sound of police sirens in the background but all they did was increase the volume, caring nothing for it.
The silhouette of the dark mansion came to view and all four of them shivered at the look of it.
“I understand why there are so many ghost stories of this place.” Jeff said.
“Not just ghost stories but reports of people going missing!”
They glanced at each other and smiled, “Let’s go check it out.”
They parked the car a few meters from the gate and walked the rest of the way and stood in front of the huge gate.
“How do we get in?” Shayla asked.
“Climb.” The rest answered in chorus.
Paolo laid a hand on the gate and was about to step up when it suddenly opened automatically.
He stepped back, swearing.
“Weird.”
The walkway led straight to the double doors and the four of them hesitated for a moment then walked up the path.
“Should we knock?” Shayla whispered.
“I’d bet you a hundred it’ll open if we do.” Cesar whispered back.
“Are we going through with this?” Paolo asked “Or you all too chicken to continue?”
“’Course we’re going through!” Shayla’s voice quavered at the last syllable.
“Yes.” They said.
Paolo raised his fist and knocked on the door twice.
Nobody answered and the door didn’t open.
“Try the knocker.”
The knocker was shaped like a weird-looking banjo that bent around forming a half-circle. Paolo hung his hand on the knocker and raised it slightly then let go.
The bang caused on the door made every one of them jump. The sound echoed through the house.
They shivered slightly and waited for any one of them to be the first to run back to the car.
They auddenly heard footsteps coming from within, slow, heavy, dragging footsteps.
“Can we g―” Shayla’s voice faded as the door opened with a sinister creak.
The four of them were momentarily blinded as light flooded from the room into the doorstep.
“Hello.”
They all stepped back warily as a tall figure appeared in the doorway.
“Are you kids lost?”
The light shone upon the speaker’s face and they saw a tall man, he could have been 70 or 60 or 50 because he looked almost ageless. He had an intelligent look about him that gave him an elderly look yet his well-toned muscles and lively eyes gave him a younger look. He looked nowhere near a composer.
“Uh―yeah.” Shayla answered. “Are you Mr. Benjamin Creeley? We were trying to find our way back to town after a short drive to the suburbs but we lost our way.”
“Yes, I am Benjamin Creeley.” The man answered. “I suppose you wouldn’t want to go back now with the rain falling.”
“What ra―”
Lightning flashed behind them followed by a clap of thunder then rain fell on them in thick drops.
“Come on in.”
“We―” Shayla almost said that they’d rather return to the car but she held her tongue, just as curious as the others to see the interior of the house. They all walked inside and stared around in awe.
“There wasn’t an ounce of light seen on the outside!” Cesar exclaimed in a whisper “Why is there so much light in here?”
“And there aren’t any light bulbs.” Paolo observed.
“Are you guys hungry?” Mr. Creeley turned to them.
“No.” Shayla answered.
“Well then―” Mr. Creeley faltered as he looked at Shayla and a light of familiarity came to his eyes “I could fix you all up for the night if you want to. The road leading out of here is dangerous when it’s raining.”
“Thank you, sir.”
Mr. Creeley walked ahead of them but glanced back once at Shayla and muttered something then led them to a room with a huge bed. He pulled 3 more mattresses into the room and a few more blankets. It was almost like he felt their fear at being left alone in a room.
“Thank you so much Mr. Creeley.” Shayla said.
She stared in surprise as Mr. Creeley turned to her and bowed with obvious reverence and stepped out of the room.
“What was that about?” Paolo asked.
“No idea.”
“Should we prowl around a bit?” Cesar asked “I swear he was too hospitable.”
Nobody answered because just at that moment, a distant instrument was heard playing.
“Do you―”
“Sssh!”
A voice rose over the instrument in a clear baritone.
“Await the guardians of this land
Coming from over the sea
They bring with them salvation
And serenity…”
“Is that Creeley?” Shayla asked.
“No more deaths by battlefield
When they arrive
End of our suffering
End of all the strife…”
The four of them sat down on their own beds suddenly overcome with fatigue.
“Fear not dear land
Magic don’t die
They’ll wash the pain
No need to cry…”
Their eyes closed peacefully and their breathing even out.
“Guardians come with healing light
Come at once, hurry, take flight
For help is needed in this land
Come, oh, guardians of this land
Await the guardians of this land
From across the sky and sea
Salvation comes, their footsteps near
Our land will soon be free…”
Benjamin Creeley opened the door quietly and knelt by the doorway uttering a short prayer. |
